My previous blog post on the real time computational framework called Storm received quite some responses. One of which was about a very nice book on the framework, called: ‘Storm Real-time Processing Cookbook’. I got my hands on a copy of this book and I would like to share with you my thoughts about the book.
As the name suggests, the book is written in ‘cookbook’-format, which basically means you will find ‘recipes’ or short tutorials about very specific subjects. Things you can use in your everyday work. Even for the less versed in Storm it is a nice read. The chapters are divided in such a way that they get gradually more complex. So the first chapter is a simple ‘Hello world!’ recipe and from that point on it slowly works up to a fully working polyglot project for Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency processing using Storm’s Trident API.
On top of that, the book offers all kinds of handy tricks and good practices such as how to do unit- and integration testing with Storm. As well as how Storm can integrate with products that are commonly used in scenarios where technologies such as Storm are used. Such as: Redis, Cassandra, ElasticSearch, Kafka, etc.
So, if you’re currently working with Storm and would like to know how to do things better or if you’re simply interested in learning how to use Storm with good real world examples, ‘Storm Real-time Processing Cookbook’ is a good source.
The people from Packt publishing have made two copies of the book available to readers of this blog. If you want a copy, simply leave a comment below and I will select the two winners on Monday September 30th.
